If you are booking a hotel before a New Orleans cruise, you have probably typed some version of "hotels near the cruise port with free shuttle" into Google. It is the right instinct, and in most cruise cities it is the right question.
In New Orleans it mostly is not.
Here is the honest version: almost no New Orleans hotel runs a free shuttle to the cruise terminals, and the best-located hotels do not need one. Both terminals sit downtown, and a large number of good hotels are within a half mile of the ship. Choosing the right neighborhood matters far more than finding a property that advertises a shuttle.
Below is what a New Orleans cruise port shuttle actually looks like here, what it costs, and — the part nobody writes about — the three legs of your trip the shuttle will not cover even if you find one.
First: know which terminal you are sailing from
New Orleans has two cruise terminals, side by side on the Mississippi near the Convention Center.
- Julia Street Terminal — Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity
- Erato Street Terminal — Carnival, Disney
They are close enough that hotel logistics are almost identical for both, but check your ticket before you book a taxi, because "the cruise terminal" is ambiguous here in a way it is not in most ports. Neither terminal runs its own shuttle into the city.
New Orleans hotels that genuinely run a cruise port shuttle
This is a short list, and it comes with caveats.
Hampton Inn & Suites Convention Center
The Hampton Inn at the Convention Center offers a complimentary shuttle to the cruise terminal. Two things to know: it is not advertised on their website, so you have to call the hotel to arrange it — and at half a mile out, most guests find they can simply walk. There is no airport shuttle here, so you will still need transportation from MSY.
Best Western Plus West Bank
Roughly eight miles out, this hotel offers a "Cruise Park and Stay" package that includes parking plus a one-way shuttle to the port.
Read that again, because it is the detail that catches people: one way. When your ship returns, you are standing at the terminal with your luggage and your car is eight miles away across the river. You will need to arrange your own ride back. Plenty of guests do not register this until disembarkation morning, when they are tired and the taxi line is long.
Hotels close enough that you do not need a shuttle at all
No cruise port shuttle required. This is where most cruisers should be looking. Every one of these is a short walk to the ship on embarkation day.

A word of caution on "walkable." Three tenths of a mile is nothing at 60 degrees with a carry-on. It is a different proposition in August, in a downpour, with two checked bags, a stroller, and a grandparent who does not do curbs. New Orleans weather does not negotiate. If anyone in your party would struggle with that walk, plan a ride and stop thinking about it.
The airport-hotel trap
Here is where we see the most avoidable mistakes.
Several hotels near Louis Armstrong International advertise a free airport shuttle — the Hilton New Orleans Airport, DoubleTree, Home2 Suites Kenner, Comfort Inn & Suites Airport North, Ramada Kenner, Holiday Inn Express Airport South. Those airport shuttles are real and genuinely free. They are not a cruise port shuttle.
They also only go to the airport.
Those hotels sit 12 to 15.5 miles from the cruise terminals — a 25 to 30 minute drive. Guests book them thinking "shuttle included" covers the whole trip, then find on cruise morning that the free shuttle runs the wrong direction entirely. With luggage, a fixed boarding window, and a group, that is the worst possible morning to be improvising.
If you are staying near the airport, budget for a port transfer from the start.
Three trips no cruise port shuttle covers
Even the hotels that do run a cruise shuttle only solve one leg: hotel to ship, on cruise day. Here is what is left.
Arrival day: MSY to your hotel. The hotel shuttle does not exist for you yet — you are not a guest until you check in. This is the leg most people underestimate, particularly on a late flight.
The day before you sail. Cruise lines tell you to fly in a day early, which is good advice. That leaves you a full day in one of the best cities in America with no transportation plan. A city tour with a chauffeur who knows the Garden District, the cemeteries, and River Road turns dead time into the part of the trip people remember.
Disembarkation morning. No cruise port shuttle runs this leg. You are off the ship by 7:00 or 9:00 am with a mid-afternoon flight and nowhere to put your luggage. That gap is the single most wasted block of a cruise vacation. It is also easy to fix: a chauffeur can hold your bags, run a tour or a long lunch, and get you to MSY with time to spare.
When a private transfer beats the shuttle outright
Hotel shuttles run on fixed departures, first come first served, with limited luggage space. That is fine for two people with carry-ons and a flexible morning. It works less well if:
